Article / Which GLP-1 Is Best for Weight Loss?

GLP-1 medications have quickly become one of the most talked-about breakthroughs in medical weight loss. Originally developed for type 2 diabetes, these injectable treatments have recently been utilized to help patients shed significant weight while improving their metabolic health. Recent studies revealed that over 2% of Americans are now using GLP-1 primarily for weight loss purposes. (1)

For men seeking new weight loss solutions, GLP-1 is likely at the top of mind. With several options available including semaglutide, tirzepatide, or liraglutide, you might be wondering which one works best.

The short answer is that it largely depends on your body, health history, and overall goals. The longer answer is where things get interesting. While these medications do share many similarities, there are also important differences that can influence your results.

In this guide, we’ll break down what GLP-1s are, how they work, the key differences between popular options, and how to decide which one could be the right fit for you as you begin your journey to a new you.

What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP‑1 receptor agonists are prescription medications that mimic the effects of the hormone glucagon‑like peptide‑1, which is naturally released by the body after eating. This hormone helps regulate blood sugar, slows stomach emptying, and signals your brain that you’re full. (2)

For people struggling with obesity or excess weight, these effects can lead to:

  • Reduced appetite and cravings
  • Eating smaller portion sizes without feeling deprived
  • More stable blood sugar, which can help curb energy crashes
  • A gradual, steady loss of body fat over time

While GLP-1 medications were first approved for diabetes management, researchers soon noticed that many patients taking the medication experienced significant weight loss as a side effect. (3) This led to the development and approval of GLP-1 drugs specifically for weight loss in people without diabetes.

Popular GLP-1 Options for Weight Loss

Over the past several years, GLP-1 receptor agonists have moved from being niche diabetes treatments to some of the most widely discussed weight-loss medications in the world. These medications mimic the effects of the body’s natural GLP-1 hormone, helping regulate blood sugar, curb appetite, and slow digestion — a combination that supports both metabolic health and fat loss. (4)

While they share a similar mechanism of action, each specific medication available has its own unique features, dosing schedule, and evidence base, which can make one a better fit than another depending on your health profile and goals.

Semaglutide (Wegovy®, Ozempic®)

Semaglutide is one of the most extensively researched GLP‑1 receptor agonists and is among the most commonly prescribed for medical weight management. Wegovy® is the version approved specifically for chronic weight management, while Ozempic® is approved for type 2 diabetes but sometimes is prescribed off-label for weight loss. (5)

Semaglutide’s dosage schedule is typically once per week. Clinical trials have shown that patients using semaglutide lose an average of 14.9% of their body weight over 68 weeks. (6) Many patients also report reduced cravings for high-calorie, high-sugar foods, making it easier to maintain a calorie deficit.

Side effects of semaglutide use may include nausea, digestive changes, acid reflux, headaches, hair loss, and fatigue. (7) However, these side effects typically subside over time as the body gets used to the new medication.

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound™)

Tirzepatide is a dual‑acting medication that targets both GLP‑1 and glucose‑dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptors, which may enhance its effects on appetite regulation and metabolism. Clinical trials have found that tirzepatide can produce greater average weight loss than semaglutide, in some cases by several additional percentage points. (8) Studies have shown that some patients taking tirzepatide achieved a weight loss of nearly 27% over an 84-week period. (9)

Tirzepatide is administered once a week and the dosage is gradually increased to minimize side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. (10)

Patients using tirzepatide often describe an earlier feeling of fullness during meals and a more noticeable reduction in snacking between meals. This GLP-1 may be especially well-suited for individuals with a significant amount of weight to lose or those who haven’t achieved their goals with other medications.

Liraglutide (Saxenda®)

Liraglutide works through the same GLP-1 pathway but has a different dosing schedule than other options on the market, requiring a daily rather than weekly injection.

Scientific results have been mixed when comparing liraglutide’s effectiveness on weight loss against semaglutide and tirzepatide. While some studies show that it can be just as effective when treating weight loss and BMI, others show that semaglutide can produce as much as 9.4% more weight loss over 68 weeks. (11) (12)

However, liraglutide also has a more established track record than other GLP-1 medications, having been on the market for a longer period of time. This longer clinical history provides a substantial safety profile, and for some patients, the steady daily dosing helps them maintain a consistent routine.

Common side effects of liraglutide are mainly gastrointestinal, and can include nausea, vomiting, constipation, or indigestion. (13)  Liraglutide is sometimes preferred for patients who cannot tolerate newer GLP-1s or who have insurance coverage that favors it.

Other Emerging Options

Several new GLP-1 and dual-acting medications are in development, some of which may be approved in the coming years. While promising, these aren’t yet widely available — and more research is needed to confirm their long-term effectiveness and safety.

Which GLP-1 Works Best?

The “best” GLP-1 won’t be the same option for every patient. Clinical trials give us valuable averages to examine, but your individual results will depend on much more than the drug itself.

That’s why working with a trusted clinician, such as your local Gameday Men’s Health location, is essential. A professional can make a recommendation for the best GLP-1 medication based around:

  • How your body responds to the medication and whether you tolerate the side effects
  • Your preferred dosing schedule (weekly vs. daily)
  • Other health conditions that could affect your safety or suitability for treatment
  • Cost and insurance coverage, which can vary greatly between drugs

While semaglutide and tirzepatide generally show the highest average weight loss in trials, liraglutide may still be the better choice for certain patients. The most important step is a thorough medical evaluation to match you with the medication that best supports your needs.

Common Side Effects and Considerations

All GLP-1 medications can cause side effects, most of which are related to digestion and other gastrointestinal issues. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation are among the most common, especially when starting treatment or increasing doses.

In rare cases, more serious risks can occur, such as pancreatitis, acute kidney injury, gallbladder issues. (14) These medications are not recommended for individuals with certain medical histories, such as a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer.

These risks are why medical supervision when using GLP-1 medication is critical — it ensures the drug is safe for you before you begin and allows for close monitoring during use.
